Explore the treasures of Italy such as Venice, unusual Islands of the Venetian Lagoon , Ravenna (featured in National Geographic Traveler’s “top-20 must-see places in the world for 2013 “ ) and its waterways , Venetian Villas on the banks of Brenta Canal, by an unusual perspective : sailing through Canals, Rivers and Venetian Lagoon you will have a unique, unforgettable experience of Italy. For centuries, when travel was still only possible by land, river, canal or sea, Ravenna, Vicenza, Classe, Pomposa and Venice were some inevitable stopping point on the way to the eastern Mediterranean, the Silk and the Incense Roads, then the Holy Land – the destination of devout pilgrims as well as crusaders and merchants… Silks, spices, wines, raisins cotton, wheat, essences, pigments, precious manuscripts and incunabula are the economical base of our Civilization! But a single lifetime is not enough to explore everything there is to be seen in Venetian and Byzantium’s Land and, as Proust said, wandering around the “Oriental city” you get the impression of being in a “boite à surprise” – a magic box full of secrets and serendipity.

In that time period, the colony had an extensive library and an important cultural life. Among its guests, the most famous were Guido D’Arezzo, Pier Damiani and later even Dante Alighieri. The Abbey is a real architectural jewel, with a beautiful bell tower with Lombard forms built in 1063, an atrium decorated with clay friezes, the naves held up with recycled Roman or Byzantine columns, frescoes of the Bologna School and Vitale degli Equi - its most representative painter of the 1300s and antique floor mosaics placed between the sixth and 12th centuries. The master in charge, Roberto Tramontin, will explain to you the history and the features of such a special boat, designed and meant exclusively for the Venice canals. Benedictine monks lived on San Servolo from at least the eighth century and for almost five hundred years. They were joined later by nuns escaping from the convents of Saints Leone and Basso on the island of Malamocco, which had been destroyed by a seaquake. At the beginning of the 15th century the nuns departed, but they were soon replaced by a few dozen other nuns, who were fleeing the Turkish invasion of Crete. However, by the beginning of the eighteenth century, only a few were left, and soon thereafter the Senate of the Republic of Venice designated San Servolo as the site of a new military hospital, needed due to the continuing war against the Turks. Later the hospital was used to care for the mentally ill. From 1995 San Servolo is a centre for research and education and a collaboration among ten universities from around the world belonging to the Venice International University and the Accademia di Belle Arti.
